About Us
The School of Library and Information Science masters program is accredited by the American Library Association and is part of the College of Communications and Information Studies at the University of Kentucky. We are located in on the UK main campus in Lexington Kentucky on the third floor of Lucille Caudill Little Fine Arts Library. Approximately 220 students are currently enrolled in MS, MA or School Media Certification programs.
Classes in library science were first offered at the University of Kentucky in 1918. During its formative years, the program emphasized school librarianship. However, by the mid 1950’s the program had expanded to include all aspects of library science. In 1982 the name of the School of Library Science was changed to the School of Library and Information Science in recognition of the expanding scope of the School’s teaching and research programs. The School of Library and Information Science awards only the master’s degree, and the program of study in library and information science, offered by the School, is one of approximately 50 educational programs in the United States currently accredited by the American Library Association. It is the only such program in the Commonwealth of Kentucky. The School is a member of the Association for Library and Information Science Education.
