UK SLIS STUDENT CURATES ARNOW EXHIBIT

UK SLIS graduate student Amber Surface has been working with the Harriette Simpson Arnow papers for over a year. Through a specialized LIS 675 (professional field experience) and under the guidance of Kate Black (UK Libraries Appalachian Curator), she is able to apply her knowledge of the collection to the curation of the exhibit, the heart of the piece by Tom Eblen in the Lexington Herald-Leader.

Ms. Surface started processing the papers in the Appalachian Archives in September 2010, where she stayed until accepting a graduate assistantship with SLIS in August 2011. She started working on the exhibit at the same time as part of the LIS 675 experience. The exhibit will open November 17, but that isn't the end! Ms. Surface will also curate a virtual exhibit to complement the exhibit.

"The physical exhibit is, of course, more extensive than the virtual exhibit," Ms. Surface shared. "The virtual exhibit will have some duplication, but mostly it will complement--not copy--the physical exhibit. Plus, I've added a few pieces that couldn't make it into the cases, so there's even more to see."

The virtual exhibit will be available in early December and will be hosted on the UK Libraries website.

For more information about the exhibit, you can read the UKY Archives blog post, read the UKNOW article by Whitney Hale, or see the exhibit invitation on the UK Libraries page.

We encourage you to visit the exhibit opening on November 17, 2011, 4pm-6pm, in the Great Hall on the second floor of the Margaret I. King Library.
